Day 49: 7/5/15 (Castle Rock)
98 miles
We slept in a little
on account of a later night than usual (going to bed at sundown). For breakfast we were treated to some Fenton
eggs and toast – we cannot disclose the recipe at this time, but they were
delicious. After breakfast we spent the
morning catching up on the blog and watching tv – well Jillian was writing the
blog mostly, Rico helped … sort of. We
also did some much needed laundry.
In the afternoon, we
finally made it to Coors Brewery. We
wanted to go on Friday, but we never made it out of the house, and then they
were closed on the 4th. The
tours are only until 4pm and we arrived just before 3:30pm so we were nervous
we wouldn’t make it, especially after seeing the long line. We were assured that we would make it into
the brewery as long as we were in line before 4pm. After about 45 minutes we made it onto a bus
and we were taken onto the brewing grounds.
We thought it was going to be a guided tour, but it turned out to be self-guided
with audio handsets. We learned a lot about beer, the history of
Coors, and all the different beers that Coors brews including Blue Moon, Red’s,
Killians, and Leinenkugle. At the end of
the tour, we were able to sample 3 10oz samples each, not bad for a free tour.
The tour ended up overlapping with the Women’s World Cup final so we missed all the exciting moments, though Rico’s dad was updating us on all the goals. Originally, we were going to meet up with Caitlin for the game, but we couldn’t get ahold of her and by the time we had made it back to Castle Rock, the game was pretty much over. We caught the last 15 minutes of the game once we got back to the house and watched USA win 5-2 over Japan (in case you didn’t hear already) – revenge is sweet.
John had some elk
burgers that he offered up for dinner and we were more than happy to take him
up on it. Neither of us had tried elk
before but these were 60% elk, 40% pork, and 100% delicious. We agreed that if the opportunity presented
itself to have elk again, we’d definitely eat it. Once Caitlin was home, we said goodbye, even
though we’d be seeing her again in Memphis and at Shannon’s wedding. The rest of the night was spent watching tv,
blogging, and packing up our stuff to leave for Oklahoma in the morning.
Fact:
USA women’s soccer is
and always will be a dominant force
Lesson:
If you do a Coors
Brewery Tour, plan for 2 hours if it’s busy
