Day 24: 6/10/15 (Portland)
22 miles
IT’S JILLIAN’S
BIRTHDAY!!!!
Jillian’s mom called
at 7:30am to wish her a happy birthday, but we were most definitely still sound
asleep so after a few grumbled words we were back to bed. Judging by the way we slept in, you would think
we’d been camping for the last week.
Eventually we were showered and ready to hit the town. Guided by our stomachs, we stumbled upon some
food trucks and decided on The Grilled Cheese Grill where we had a grilled
cheese sandwich with avocado, red peppers, and red onion. We ate on the way to Voodoo Doughnuts, a shop
that was recommended by our friend Drew back home, and more recently by Alli in
Seattle. Drew wanted us to bring him
back a doughnut, but we weren’t sure it would make it. When we reached the shop, the line was out
the door and down the block so we decided we’d come back later – it’s open 24
hours so we knew time wouldn’t be an issue.
We went into a random hotel to find a walking map since we didn’t want
another wandering repeat like in Seattle.
We also picked up a restaurant guide which led us to the Rock Bottom Brewery
for a quick beer. When we left we headed
back to Voodoo since we were still in the area, and just like that, there was
hardly a line. We ended up ordering the
McMinnville which was a maple frosted filled doughnut, the Captain my Captain
which was a regular doughnut topped with Captain Crunch Berry cereal, and the
Memphis Mafia doughnut which was like a big fritter topped with bananas,
cinnamon, peanut butter, chocolate, peanuts, and a chocolate chips (we saved
this one for later).
Once we dropped the
doughnut off in the car, we went to Jake’s Crawfish for the rest of happy
hour. They’re known for their seafood,
but we didn’t end up trying any – oops.
We got a few apps and some wine to start, then Jillian got a pomegranate
mojito and Rico got a pisco
sour (brandy sour). Once we were full
and liquored up, we walked over to Powell’s bookstore which is the largest new
and used book store in the world. There
are several rooms within the store categorized for different genres of
books. Rico selected a prison escape
story and a novel that takes place on the sea.
Jillian picked two crime/mystery novels, one which is written by J.K.
Rowling under a pseudonym. We brought
the books to the car and tried to figure out what we wanted to do the rest of
the night. Jillian spotted a cupcake
store and we were on our way. She picked
out a hazelnut cupcake with a raspberry filling and raspberry frosting. As we sat outside the bakery, Jillian called
home and talked with her parents a bit.
We’re pretty sure Jillian’s dad misses us both, though his biggest thing
was asking how hairy we were. We’re
pretty sure he was disappointed to hear that we’ve been showering and shaving. Other than that, it seems that everyone at
home is doing well and having fun.
We ended up at
Bridgeport Brewery for one last drink and a bite to eat. At this point we realized how much we had
eaten and that there was no way we could eat anything else – except ice
cream! On the way home we stopped at
Salt & Straw which is a homemade ice cream shop with very unique flavors. They were featuring a few flavors from some
of the food trucks around town so of course we tried them. We had olive oil, lingonberry and goat’s
milk, freckled chocolate, and poutine.
The olive oil and poutine were by far the strangest just because they weren’t
sweet flavors. The poutine tasted like a
salty/cheesy ice cream with gravy swirled in – so strange. During the day, we had been looking up food
trucks trying to select the ones we wanted to try and Jillian found a hotdog
cart close to where we were staying. The
truck was also close to Salt & Straw so we walked down, but they were
already closed. We went home and
collapsed into a food coma.
Fact:
The only way to fully
embrace Portland is with an empty stomach
Lesson:
As enticing as it may
be, and as daring as you may want to be, the weird flavors aren’t always the good flavors
