Day 23: 6/9/15 (Seattle to Portland)
181 miles
Today was a pretty
low-key day. We woke up and slowly
gathered our things to depart Seattle and head to Portland. We hung around until late morning so we could
order some sandwiches from Paseos as recommended by Alli. We decided on their popular Caribbean Roast
Pork and the Paseo Press (kind of like your classic Cuban). Despite calling 30 minutes ahead, our order
wasn’t ready when we arrived. The line
was out the door and growing by the minute.
Finally we got our sandwiches and holy cow they were big! We ate one as we drove to Portland, switching
off driving and eating, and we saved one for dinner when we arrived.
The drive through to
Portland was only a few hours and we found our Portland home without a
problem. We used a house rental site to
get a basement apartment for a few days.
One of the first things we noticed was a vintage-looking sign with a cat
on it that said “Rochester and Dover, N.H.”.
We would have never believed that something from Dover would make it
over 3,000 miles away – coast to coast – and it would be hanging in a random
apartment that we decided to rent. Once
we unloaded everything and caught up on our blog, we skyped Rico’s dad so we
could finally get some face time with our kitty. She seemed pretty sleepy, but we could totally
tell that she misses us. The rest of the
night we tried figuring out what Portland had to offer and what we wanted to accomplish
on our first day in the city.
Fact:
Little
hole-in-the-wall places always make the best food
Lesson:
When you find a piece of home in a foreign place it will make you feel a little bit less than 3,000 miles away
