Day 16: 6/2/15 (Missoula)
20
miles
Today we woke up with plans to get out of
the house and see what Montana had to offer.
We spent the morning figure out the next 3 weeks of our trip so we could
book our stays in Portland, OR and in Sonoma Valley. Our original plan for Portland fell through
so we first started looking at hostels but the price was fairly close to
renting a house for a few nights. Thanks
to Rico’s sister Shannon for introducing us to a cool website that allows you
to search for house rentals, we found a place close to down town for under
$100. We were also able to find a deal
on Living Social at a bed & breakfast near Sonoma that came with vouchers
for 8 different wine tastings!
After booking everything, we felt like we
should reward ourselves by heading out for a happy hour. Our first stop was to Great Harvest, a bread
place, where you are offered a slice of bread upon walking through the
door. Rico tried the apple crunch and
Jillian tried breakfast blast (full of seeds, nuts, and raisins). Next we drove up the street to Top Hat Lounge
for some drinks and apps. We shared some
calamari and plantain chips and had some local beer. We tried Missoula’s cold smoke which was
delicious! We also got an Austrian
shandy which is apparently all the rage now.
We can see how it’s the perfect summer drink since it was so light and
fruity. After a few more drinks we
walked over to Bridge Pizza to meet up with Kevin, Ari, Ari’s dad, and the
kids. We finally got to taste this
awesome pizza we kept hearing about and the flavor lived up to all the hype. We also got to try Big Dipper ice cream which
is some fabulous homemade ice cream. Rico
enjoyed most of Jillian’s ice cream though because she pretty much passed out
once we got in the car. While Jillian
was sleeping it off, Rico spent the rest of the night watching the first half
of the USA v South Korea women’s soccer game.
Fact:
Bread tastes even better when it’s free
Lesson:
If you want to enjoy some good ice cream,
don’t have 5 drinks prior to getting to the ice cream shop
