Day 33: 6/19/15 (Marina Del Rey)
0 miles
We woke up this
morning for the first time in Southern California and finally had some warmer
weather. It was still fairly cloudy, but
we could manage in a t-shirt and shorts.
We took Kristen and Dan’s suggestion to walk down to Venice beach which
is a short walk from their apartment. We
only got a little bit lost/confused, but it’s pretty easy to stumble upon a
huge beach and ocean. We had heard some
crazy things about Venice beach from a few different people, but I guess we
were too early for all the weirdos. The beach
was surprising empty when we walked through around 12pm. It wasn’t quite hot enough to jump in the water,
so we decided to walk up the street to a burrito place suggested by
Kristen.
Once we were finished
with our lunch, we headed back to the apartment to try and plan some more of
our trip and to search for apartments back in NH. This whole homeless thing is becoming a
little bit annoying – shout out to Chelsea for being so helpful and willing to
find us a place when we return. We also
looked into our trips to the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, and all the
national parks in Utah. We’ve realized
that not planning early enough has bitten us in the ass a few times so we’re
trying to be more proactive. You can
only hike down into Antelope Canyon with a guide so we’re hoping we can find a cheap
tour.
Shortly after Kristen
came home from work, we headed to Santa Monica for dinner. Most people know about Uber, which is an
alternative to using taxis, but we had never used the service before (mostly because
we don’t have smart phones). To no
surprise, it’s pretty popular out here so we took an Uber to and from the
restaurant. We were extremely lucky to
be treated to a delicious meal at the Sonoma Wine Garden. We split a salad with grilled peaches and
then each had the salmon dinner served over quinoa – so good! When were done eating, we Kristen FaceTimed
with Shannon so we could all say hello (she was in St. Louis celebrating her
last bridal shower). We headed down to
the pier in search of fried dough, but had to settle for funnel cake. Before bed we did a little bit more
researching and planning, but quickly fell asleep.
Apparently Venice
doesn’t get weird until the early afternoon when the bums wake up
Lesson:
If you want fried dough, don't come to the west coast - apparently funnel cake is all the rage
