Day 8: 5/25/15 (Deer River)
0 miles
Today’s weather was a
little bit "ishy" (some Minnesotan word) so we hung around indoors to spend some time thinking about
the days between Minnesota and Montana.
As always, breakfast was amazing.
We had an omelette filled with asparagus from the garden, the morels we
foraged, and swiss. On the side was some
sausage, fresh fruit, and toast with homemade jam (they’re going to have to
kick us out to make us leave!) We all
kept ourselves busy well into the afternoon before we decided to get out and do
something. We took a mini road trip in
the rain to see some of the beautiful north country and to check out Janet and
Marty’s favorite watering hole. Jillian
tried a Minnesota beer while Rico stuck with Michelob Golden (what we'd been drinking at the house). We ordered some fried cheese curds since we didn’t
end up getting some in Wisconsin on our drive through (it was late night/early
morning driving). Once we left, Janet
and Rico ran into the woods to see if there were any morel mushrooms. I guess Janet and Marty had overheard that
the mushrooms grew in the bar’s backyard.
Unfortunately they came back empty handed.
Once we were back,
Janet took on Rico for a few more games of cribbage and ended up beating him
three times in a row. Jillian was busy checking
all our expenses to make sure everything was accounted for. Then we all joined in for a card game called
golf which is truly a game of luck and not strategy. Janet’s phrases throughout the game consisted
of, “kill me”, “bite me”, and “stupid, stupid game” – obviously she was a fan. We dined on our leftover pizza from Chicago
and later split a few turkey sandwiches.
For dessert we had apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Everyone went to bed with full bellies!
There weren’t very
many picture-worthy moments today, but we figured we would share this video of
the loon calls at night. You can’t see
anything, but the sound is what we’re sharing here.
Fact:
Janet does not like
losing and she really really really likes winning
Lesson:
Don’t talk about
morel mushrooms in a bar because then everyone
knows about the spot out back and you won't find any anymore
